“A work of harrowing, visceral power.” — Miami Herald On the Outs tells the story of three adolescent girls from Jersey City who divide their time between the streets, shaky home ground, and juvenile jail. Silverbush researched the project at a juvenile detention center in Secaucus, NJ and filmed out on the streets of Jersey City using real members of the community — mothers, fathers, curious little kids, gang members and drug dealers — many of whom helped out or appear in the film. On the Outs won numerous festival awards, including both the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at Slamdance – the first ever to take both awards in one year. The film was distributed domestically by Polychrome Pictures and internationally by La Fabrique de Films to critical acclaim.
